Sprayed-on Cement is projected onto a surface at high velocity using a hose. It can be impacted onto any type or shape of surface and is an effective sealant.
Waterproof Membranes are installed along the exterior surface of a wall. They can be installed relatively quickly; however, they cannot remain in place indefinitely and will deteriorate with continued exposure to the sun.
Asphalt is applied directly to the outside surface of a house's walls. It functions as a sealant to prevent leakage in dry floodproofed homes.
Drainage Lines around the perimeter of a structure allow flood waters to more effectively flow away from the area.
Plumbing Check Valves allow liquid to flow through them in only one direction. They prevent backed up water or sewage from draining back into a house.
A Sump Pump is a pump used to remove water that has accumulated in a water-collecting sump basin, commonly found in the basement of homes.
Metal Flood Shields are typically used to create watertight seals over medium to large openings in building walls. They are more expensive than wood flood shields, but they are also sturdier.
Wood Flood Shields are typically used to close medium to large openings in building walls. They are cheaper than metal flood shields, but are not as sturdy.

A Levee Riprap is the layering of rocks (angular rocks generally being preferred) along a threatened area to counteract the constant wearing away of land brought about by repetitive hyrdologic activity.
An Interior Drainage System collects water that seeps through the seals on a house during a flood. The system usually includes a sump pump and an emergency power source that allows operation during an outage.
Closures work in conjunction with waterproof membranes to seal off openings in walls. Closures can be either temporary or permanent, and many have rubberized seals and other components that require periodic maintenance.
Seeding of Disturbed Area Areas that have been disturbed by floodproofing should be seeded in order to control erosion and re-stabilize the area.
North Carolina Emergency Management has developed an online application (FIMAN) to provide citizens with near real time flood inundation, impacts and alerting for selected areas of the state. Within the FIMAN application, users can sign up for alerts if current or forecasted conditions reach flood levels.
Please use the slider bar below to adjust the reach distance from your selected location for available flood inundation and warning sites. For more information about each site, click on the site name and you will be redirected to the FIMAN site.
